Applicants will be asked to attend an interview and as part of the process they will need to bring a portfolio of their work with them.

Applicants will be asked to provide 15 – 20 images, to include a balance of initial sketches as well as more resolved final artwork. For example, it could include drawing, painting, photographs, sculpture, textiles, or digital art. You will be asked to include a short sentence on each page so that we can understand how the work relates to a project or theme, and you will need to be able to talk about your work as part of the interview process.

The portfolio is an essential part of the application process and is needed to gain entry to any of the courses at the Medway School of Arts. It is an excellent way for the tutors to get an overview of everything you have achieved so far and how your work has developed.

We want applicants to show us examples in different mediums and we like to see both the creative and planning process as part of the evidence provided in your portfolio. The examples provided do not need to be completed pieces but do need to give us an insight into your skills and interests. We also recommend spending some time on presentation. Getting your portfolio in order ahead of time and presenting it in a tidy way will help you when it comes to talking about it, and help your future tutors see your work in its best light.

If you have an electronic portfolio, it is not necessary to print off your work, we are happy to review the portfolio online.

What do you expect to see in a portfolio?

What we would like to see in your portfolio:

Sketchbooks full of ideas and visual experimentation.

Drawing skills – observational drawing, mark making and experiments.

Evidence of self-initiated projects / work / blogs.

Evidence of visual research – gallery and museum visits / magazines, documentaries etc.
