This accessibility statement applies to www.midkent.ac.uk
This website is run by MidKent College. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website.
For example, that means you should be able to:
- Change colours, contrast levels and fonts using the ReciteMe tool bar
- Zoom in to read text without it falling off the side of the screen
- Navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
- Listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)
- Use the ReciteMe tool bar to adjust page settings to your personal preferences.
We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.
AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.
How accessible this website is
We know that some parts of this website are not fully accessible:
- Videos don’t have subtitles embedded, they must be turned on via the YouTube control buttons.
- Some areas of the website feature complex data which is pulled in from external resources (such as course information and labour market information systems).
- Signed documents from our governing body that have been scanned and uploaded may contain elements that are inaccessible to screen readers.
- At 200% zoom the chat box covers the hamburger menu and 'Contact us' is partially cut off.
- At 400% zoom the chat box covers the policy button and 'Contact us' in the menu.
- The 'Register Now' button on our Contact Us page does not have sufficient colour contrast when it receives keyboard focus.
- The Recaptcha used on forms implements a hidden field which does not have a form label.

MidKent College is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.
Compliance status
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below:
- videos are hosted on YouTube to ensure good quality video across multiple platforms. The closed captions are generated by YouTube and by default are turned off. These must be controlled by the YouTube control buttons embedded in the player on this site.
- Signed documents from our governing body that have been scanned and uploaded may contain elements that are inaccessible to screen readers.
- The Recaptcha used on forms implements a hidden field which does not have a form label.
Non-accessible content
The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons:
- videos are hosted on YouTube to ensure good quality video across multiple platforms. The closed captions are generated by YouTube and by default are turned off. These must be controlled by the YouTube control buttons embedded in the player on this site.
- Signed documents from our governing body that have been scanned and uploaded may contain elements that are inaccessible to screen readers.
- The Recaptcha used on forms implements a hidden field which does not have a form label.
Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations:
The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons:
- WCAG 2.4.3 Focus Order - the Livechat box opens after 20 seconds on page. The focus order does not dynamically respond to this, so users need to tab through the whole page before they are able to close the chat box.
- WCAG 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value - some elements on some pages, including tags, are pulled through to the site directly from our back-office systems. This means that in some instances screen readers may struggle to communicate an accurate tag. There is a disproportionate burden associated with this issue, and it is documented under 'Disproportionate burden' below. .
- WCAG 1.3.1 Info and Relationships - some tables in pdf documents may not be marked up in a way that aids use of assistive technologies like screen readers. This is particularly the case when hard copy documents have been signed and scanned prior to upload (which is a requirement). We will review options to resolve this by September 2024.
- WCAG 1.4.3 Contrast - the 'Register Now' button on our Contact Us page does not have sufficient colour contrast when it receives keyboard focus. Anticipated completion: September 2024.
- WCAG 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value - the Recaptcha used on forms implements a hidden field which does not have a form label.
Disproportionate burden:
- It's not possible to operate the site without pulling some elements related to our product offer through from our back-office system.
- The Recaptcha used on forms is a third-party system over which we have no direct control, and cannot correct this issue.
Content that's not within the scope of the accessibility regulations:
The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services.
We do not plan to add captions to live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations.
What we're doing to improve accessibility
- We will complete accessibility checks of this site on an annual basis. The latest check took place on 10th May 2024. The next scheduled check will take place in May 2025, but unscheduled checks may take place if structural changes are made to the site.
- We are providing training to all staff involved in uploading images to the site to minimise instances of images not tagged with alternative text.
- We are providing training to all staff involved in creating PDF files uploaded to the site to minimise instances where documents are not titled clearly.
- We are reviewing the way we display complex information drawn from third party sources.
- We are working with our web development partner to assess the feasbility of dynamic focus ordering to enable closure of the chat box without tabbing through entire pages. Anticipated completion: January 2025.
- We will undertake a rolling review of non-text content to update with alternative text where missing. Anticipated completion: ongoing.
