Course Description

Higher National Certificates are specialist vocational programmes linked to professional body requirements and national occupational standards where appropriate, with a strong workrelated emphasis.

This qualification builds a strong foundation in the key concepts and practical skills required by employers in the building services sector and are recognised nationally by employers.

There is a strong emphasis on HVAC and electrical building services design alongside the development of requisite knowledge and understanding of building services.

> Refrigeration Design
> Thermofluids
> 2D CAD.

> Typical lessons will involve research-based activities, individual and group projects, practical exercises and presentations

> Students will usually wish to purchase textbooks although there are extensive library and online resources available.

> The modules are internally assessed using a variety of methods and styles as appropriate to each module. Assessment methods include assignments, research projects, problem solving case studies, practical tasks, group work, oral presentations, time-constrained assignments and formal examinations

> We celebrate our students' achievement at our graduation ceremony, however, costs for gown hire etc are borne by the student

> This programme is validated by the University of Greenwich.

Future Prospects

Successful completion can benefit the pursuit of a career goal as a technician or professional working in the building services engineering sector, or as a project manager, estimator or services design technician. You may also want to continue onto the HND in Building Services Design Engineering (Top-up).

Entry Requirements

You will need one of the following:
> Equivalent of 80 UCAS points (under the new tariff) from A-levels (including minimum grade B/grade 5 in maths)
> A BTEC National Certificate (minimum MMM grade)
> An Extended Diploma (minimum MMM grade)
> A GNVQ (Advanced) in a relevant discipline
> An Access to Higher Education Diploma.

This qualification has a high level of maths content, students will need strong maths skills in order to be successful on this programme. All students will undergo an initial maths assessment before they are enrolled, please note that if students are not able to demonstrate maths competence at the required level they may not be offered a place on the course.

Mature candidates who do not meet the above criteria may still be admitted to the course subject to an interview with the course leader and initial assessments of their English and maths..
