The College is closed and will re-open to students on Monday 6 January 2025. We will respond to your emails and voicemails upon our return. Happy holidays 🎄✨

      • We offer fully-equipped salons providing a high-quality commercial setting in which students can gain the skills that will significantly enhance their job prospects.

Our Hairdressing and Barbering study programmes lead to nationally recognised qualifications that either prepare students for work in the hairdressing industry or enable those who are already qualified as hairdressers to develop and enhance their skills.

      • What will I learn?

You’ll gain plenty of hands-on experience, whilst learning the key underpinning theory behind hairdressing and barbering. You'll be required to practice your skills on clients (organised visitors, friends and family), your classmates and a "training head", learning how to professionally shampoo, condition, blow-dry, cut and colour hair. At a more advanced level, you’ll be able to enhance your technical skills in creative cutting and colouring. Our Hairdressing and Barbering study programmes will equip you with everything needed to work in a salon or barbers.

The awarding body for the qualifications is VTCT (Vocational Training Charitable Trust), a specialist awarding and assessment organisation offering vocational and technical qualifications.

      • Why choose a MidKent College Hairdressing or Barbering study programme?

Our tutors are expertly trained salon professionals who will provide you with the support and advice you need to successfully pursue a career in hairdressing or barbering. We work closely with local employers to ensure you learn the practical and theoretical skills that you'll need in the industry. Part of your study programme will involve real life work experience, so you'll be best placed when applying for your next job. With our Hairdressing study programme or Barbering qualifications, you’ll earn a nationally recognised qualification that will not only prepare you for future work, but will also significantly enhance your employability.

      • How is English & maths involved?

If you're aged 16-18 years old, English and maths will be a key part of your study programme. You'll study both subjects at a level to suit you. You can then apply these skills to communicating with your customers or managing stock in a salon.

      • What facilities and trips are available?

Get inspiration for your projects through trips to places such as the Salon International exhibition. We also arrange a variety of competitions to demonstrate your developing skills and our students have also participated in the KFE's Hairdresser of the Year competition. Both campuses boast modern commercial salons where, once you're more confident, you'll practise your skills on clients.

      • What have your past students gone on to do?

Successful students have entered employment in the local hair and beauty industry. One has launched her own business and now manages three salons with over 60 employees!

      • What can I do afterwards?

You'll have the skills and techniques to enter a variety of roles in the beauty industry including salon manager, hairdresser, barber or even colour technologist. Have you thought about becoming a film set stylist, creative stylist or theatrical stylist?

      • What’s the difference between a Hairdressing course and a study programme?

Traditionally you may have studied a Hairdressing course or Barbering qualification, where you would only study the qualification, such as cutting, colouring and customer service. A Hairdressing or Barbering study programme is so much more than a Hairdressing or Barbering course!

This change to study programmes is due to national feedback from employers saying young people need to have more than just a “qualification”; they need to have the skills to work in their chosen industry. A study programme encompasses the subject qualification, English and maths skills as well as work experience and personal development skills. You can read more about study programmes here.
