• What will I learn?

You’ll be taught the essential elements of sports and fitness including fitness testing, anatomy, physiology, psychology and practical sport. You may progress to focus on the function of the human body and its impact in relation to sport, as well as the benefits related to exercise. You can also specialise in topics including biomechanics, sports massage, nutrition and coaching.

The qualifications include a mixture of theory and practical lessons, with practical units including fitness testing, practical team and individual sports, and sports coaching.

      • Why choose a MidKent College Sport, Fitness & Leisure study programme?

We enjoy partnerships with Gillingham Football Club and Maidstone United Football Club. With the right level 3 qualification you could go on to university.

Our staff are highly trained and experienced sportspeople who are perfectly positioned to provide you with all the support you need to set you up for employment in the sports industry; whatever your desired path may be.

      • How is English & maths involved?

If you are aged 16 to 18 years old, English and maths will be a core part of your study programme. You will study both subjects at a level which is appropriate to you. These skills will help when arranging sports events, in healthcare and nutrition and sports marketing.

      • What have your past students gone on to do?

Our students have progressed into a range of careers including sports centre manager, osteopath and boxing coach. Past students have also become Olympic athletes, Paralympic gold medallists and England World Cup winners!

      • What can I do afterwards?

There’s a whole range of options available to you from sports marketing officer to personal trainer or fitness instructor. Why not consider becoming a coach, physiotherapist or sport centre manager? It’s also common for our students to further their qualifications through a university degree.

      • What facilities and trips are available?

You may have the opportunity to visit Wembley Stadium, St Georges Park, London 2012 sporting facilities and outdoor activity centres.

      • What’s the difference between a Sports course and a study programme?

Traditionally you may have studied a Sport course, where you would only study the qualification, such as anatomy, practical sport and fitness testing. A Sport study programme is so much more than a Sport course!

This change to study programmes is due to national feedback from employers saying young people need to have more than just a “qualification”; they need to have the skills to work in their chosen industry. A study programme encompasses the subject qualification, English and maths skills as well as work experience and personal development skills. You can read more about study programmes here.
