Committees

Sub-committees serve the governing body and meet several times a year.

• Group Risk & Audit Committee

  The main responsibility of this committee is to advise the governing body on how well the Group's internal control systems (e.g. finance, IT etc.) are working.

  It has a key role in acting as an 'independent arm' to ensure the information provided to the governing body – and the systems that generate it – are robust and accurate. In other words, the committee is the 'eyes and ears' of the governing body.

  Its members must be capable of independent, authoritative and objective consideration of complex and potentially sensitive issues, and must provide impartial advice to the governing body.

  At MidKent College the word 'risk' was added to the audit committee's title to ensure a strong focus on the risk register and strategic risks in the College.

• Finance & Resources Committee

  The main responsibility of this committee is to advise the govering body on all aspects of its finances, financial policies and controls (e.g. annual budgets, capital expenditure and funding).

  Its members determine the College's investment and borrowing programmes, and review the financial regulations on a regular basis.

  They also recommend the annual accounts to the governing body for approval.

• Quality, Teaching & Learning Committee

  This committee is responsible for advising the governing body on the overall academic performance of the College.

  It makes clear recommendations and provides full reports on issues arising from the monitoring and evaluation of College provision and its improvement strategies, specifically including the approval of the annual self-assessment report and the quality improvement plan.

  An annual cycle of business includes the review of data to monitor the quality of teaching and learning at the College. Membership includes two external governors, staff and student governors, the principal and vice principal, and the assistant principal with responsibility for standards and quality improvement.

  Since July 2015 the Committee have also met monthly via a one hour teleconference call to monitor progress.  Other Governors often join the call and all Governors receive copies of the informal notes.

• Search & Governance Committee

  This committee's main functions are to advise the governing body on the appointment of its members, to identify nominations in respect of vacancies, and to consider the composition and balance of the board and its committees.

  It monitors members' attendance at all meetings and undertakes periodical skills audits to balance the range of skills and experience on the governing body. The committee also deals with the process for self-assessment and reviews governors' training requirements.

  Finally, the committee considers all aspects of governance and makes recommendations to the governing body as required.

• Group Joint Audit & Risk and Finance & General Purposes Committee

  This committee meet for one annual meeting where the two committees come together to jointly consider the audit management letters, draft end of year accounts before they are approved by corporation.
