• What will I learn?

You can take your first steps by learning all of the basic cookery methods and food and beverage service skills on the level 1 and 2 programmes. You could also have the opportunity to supervise a kitchen team and learn about recipe development, food sourcing and production. Progress further onto a level 3 qualification where you'll learn supervisory skills too.

      • Why choose a MidKent College Hospitality & Catering study programme?

Our Hospitality & Catering lecturers are all industry professionals, and so are best placed to aid you towards your career in the hospitality and catering industry. Your study programme will also focus on your English and maths skills, so you'll be more confident when you enter employment. You'll also complete work experience, so you'll have those key practical skills employers are looking for in any potential employee.

      • How is English & maths involved?

If you're aged 16-18 years old, English and maths will be a key part of your study programme. You'll study both subjects at a level that is appropriate to you. You will need to be confident in weighing and purchasing ingredients.

      • What have your past students gone on to do?

Successful students have progressed into the local catering industry, and nationally too! Others have gone onto university to hone their skills further.

      • What can I do afterwards?

You'll have the practical skills you need to enter a range of occupations including as a chef, dietician, food critic or even as a restaurant manager! Some students have chosen to further their studies at university.

      • What facilities and trips are available?

Our students are given the opportunity to visit hospitality venues and restaurants in places such as Borough Market in London, Billingsgate, Paris and Barcelona, to get creative ideas for their own dishes. You can also take part in regional and national competitions, or gain real hands-on experience in the College's Oaks Restaurant with paying customers.

You'll also be inspired by a wide range of different speakers and workshops including learning about chocolate, butchery, game and industry life from practicing chefs!

      • What’s the difference between a Hospitality & Catering course and a study programme?

Traditionally you may have studied a Hospitality & Catering course, where you would only study the qualification, such as recipe development, food sourcing and cooking skills. A Hospitality & Catering study programme is so much more than a Hospitality & Catering course!

This change to study programmes is due to national feedback from employers saying young people need to have more than just a “qualification”; they need to have the skills to work in their chosen industry. A study programme encompasses the subject qualification, English and maths skills as well as work experience and personal development skills.
