Course Description

The ESOL department offers a range of courses which will appeal to you if English is not your first language.

Students have an opportunity to study English at the appropriate level. This will be determined at interview to gain experience in the use of the English language. Students will take exams in Speaking & Listening, Reading and Writing which are spread throughout the year, from September until July.

Students will also work towards gaining qualifications in Functional Skills in maths, as well as improving their study and ICT skills, grammar, vocabulary, through a variety of teaching methods and materials in their weekly lessons.

The study programme has been designed to give students the opportunity not only to gain an accredited unit qualification in English from Entry 1 to Level 1, but also the necessary experience to improve their employability skills to determine the correct pathway for them.

The course also has a strong focus on personal and social development and is taught by a strong team of highly qualified teachers who are very experienced, skilled, committed and will walk the extra mile to support you.

There are also exciting opportunities to participate in enterprise projects alongside working with others and within the community.

Other Important Information

> There is a strong focus on improving literacy and numeracy stills and the curriculum is based around employability skills
> Independent study outside of lesson time will be a requirement and deadlines set for homework will be closely monitored
> Your place on the course will be at risk if you fail to meet deadlines and targets set by your tutors
> This is a study programme which includes English, maths and work experience in addition to your main programme

Future Prospects

Students may have the necessary skills to progress onto the next level within ESOL. Students tend to progress into employment or further study once ESOL at Entry Level 3 is achieved.

Students must have at least 90% attendance, complete all necessary qualifications they are enrolled on and have a positive attitude to be able to progress.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal requirements but acceptance on to the course is subject to an interview and an initial assessment is carried out to determine the level of study.
