Course Description

The purpose of the VTCT Level 1 NVQ Certificate in Hairdressing and Barbering qualification is to provide you with the knowledge, skills and understanding to be a hairdressing or barbering assistant.

This qualification is designed for learners aged 16 years or over and has both mandatory and optional units for you to achieve. The mandatory units are shampooing and conditioning hair, preparing for hair services and maintaining the work area, contributing to effective working relationships and blow drying hair. The optional section of this qualification allows you to gain skills in, plait and twist hair using basic techniques. Assist with hair colouring and lightening services,

You will learn through theory and practical sessions and you will undertake practical exams. Working on external clientele to complete your practical assessments.

Other Important Information

We expect all students to wear a uniform. Our uniform is a tunic and trousers with closed in black shoes. This is a mandatory requirement and tunics can be obtained from a designated supplier. A list of the kit required for your practical lessons will be given on enrolment which can also be sourced from a designated supplier.

All MidKent College students will continue studying English and maths until they are 19, or until they have achieved a Grade C/4. Your study programme will incorporate a Work Placement of up to 350 hours in a role relevant to your study. All students will have access to a Personal Tutor to support their personal and professional development.

Future Prospects

The main purpose of this qualification is to enable you to gain employment as an assistant/apprentice hairdresser or barber in a commercial salon/barber shop. You can also progress to the next level of learning via a range of vocational qualifications at Level 2, these include:

  • VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing
  • VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Barbering
  • VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Women’s

Entry Requirements

A minimum of four GCSEs at grade 2/F or above, including English or maths.
