Course Description

The Diploma in Teaching (DiT) has been developed to enable those working or intending to work in the Further Education and Skills sector (FES) to gain a full teaching qualification. By studying the DiT you will learn the essentials to become an effective teaching practitioner. Through a highly supportive and interactive environment, we welcome you to start your teaching qualification with us.

The qualification is made up of eight core units and is placed at level 5.
Unit 501: Teaching my subject.
Unit 502: Learners and learning.
Unit 503: Teachers and Teaching.
Unit 504: Professional practice.
Unit 505: Effective digital and online pedagogies.
Unit 506: Action research.
Unit 507: Coaching and mentoring.
Unit 508: Managing behaviour.

This is a requirement if you have lived, studied, or worked overseas for three months or more in the last five years. Further information and guidance associated with additional costs are available from the Home Office.

Future Prospects

The Diploma in Teaching will prepare you to pursue a career as a Further Education and Skills teacher. This will enable you to teach in a variety of different settings, which can include:
Further Education (General FE Colleges and Sixth Form Colleges).
Adult education
Work-based learning
Offender learning
Community learning
Successful completion of the course will allow you to progress onto a BA (Hons) degree in Education and Professional Training if you choose to continue your studies.

On successful completion of the Diploma you can apply for Qualified Teacher, Learning and Skills (QTLS) status through the Education and Training Foundation (ETF). You could also apply for Advanced Teacher Status (ATS).

Entry Requirements

>You will need to complete an initial assessment designed to determine whether a level 5 qualification is appropriate and achievable.
>You must hold a qualification which evidences a minimum of Level 2 in mathematics and English.
>You must hold a qualification in the subject you wish to teach or are teaching. For academic subjects, it is expected that teachers will hold a degree in your subject specialism. For vocational subjects it is expected that you should be qualified to at least one level above the level you intend to teach. Where this is not possible because such qualifications do not exist, you should have the highest qualification available and/or be able to provide evidence of substantial professional experience in your vocational subject.
>You must have access to 150 teaching practice hours.
>You must have access to two placements and a total of 250 hours of practice. This can be full-time, part-time, paid, or voluntary.
