I have been doing hair since I was little girl as I used to cut my dolls hair! I style and dye my own hair and use myself as a blank canvas. I chose this programme as I want to know more about the hairdressing industry.

We do a mixture of things in our practical lessons such as fringes, back to one length and hair ups. At the moment we are learning about cutting. We get a basic knowledge of what we are doing and then go into it in more depth.

The tutors are teaching us about how each salon has different ways they like you to style hair so we learn different cutting and blow drying techniques. We are also focusing on presentation in salons and consultations with clients. I would definitely recommend this programme if you want to know more about the hair industry.

I am only halfway through my programme and I have learnt so much it’s actually surprised me. I went to sixth form for a year but decided it wasn’t for me as you still get treated like a child. I knew that at College you would be treated more like an individual and an adult and I feel like I’ve learnt so much more at College.

My target is to eventually own my own salon and run my own business. I think people should know that there is a lot of theory work involved. You need to write quite a bit down for your revision purposes and so the tutors can be sure you understand what you have been taught. There is a lot of paperwork to fill in and how much depth you need to go into with consultations for clients as you need to make sure you know what you are doing. You do not want things to go wrong as you could end up being sued!

My tutors are so helpful especially Theresa. She pushes us to do better which is important as you can get to know your limits and it is surprising how much you do know when you have that encouragement and support. The facilities are great, reliable and safe, everything you would get in a salon they have, it’s hi-tech.
