Simply put, apprenticeships enable people to enter the world of work, earn a decent wage and learn new skills.
Apprenticeships are an increasingly popular alternative for students of all ability levels who want to balance their study with earning a living and building their CV through real work.
Apprenticeships mix on-the-job training with classroom-based learning. Not only will your son or daughter leave with a nationally recognised qualification, but they’ll also have the know-how and savvy to cut it in the industry. Getting their initial foot in the door of work can be difficult or daunting, and an apprenticeship is that initial foot in the door. They’ll also bring in fresh ideas to a business too – it’s win-win for all involved!
From social media to horticulture, hairdressing to construction trades, there are over 270 different types of apprenticeship available, suitable in almost every industry you can think of*. They will work about 30 hours a week with an employer, and one day a week at College studying for that all-important qualification.
They typically last between one and three years, depending on the type of apprenticeship and level of qualification. They’re also paid! (So you should have less of your son or daughter asking for cash!). Information of wages can be found here.
Competition is strong, so like a job, they’ll need to demonstrate they’re enthusiastic and committed to the apprenticeship. The right apprenticeship for your child will depend on their interests and the opportunities locally – guide their decision but do not dictate!
An apprenticeship isn’t just for 16 year olds too, higher apprenticeships are a real and recognised alternative to university. They’ll have training up to degree level, a decent salary and a fantastic opportunity to launch their career.
