Sally Smoker, a former Photography student, entered a competition to exhibit her work for three months at the Turner Contemporary and her entry was successful. We're so proud of her! Could one of our creative qualifications be an option for you?
This year Turner Contemporary has teamed up with Rise Up Clean Up, a local environmental advocacy group set up in 2020 to help tackle litter pollution on Margate’s beaches.
The artwork brief was to address the current climate crisis, including the rising numbers of plastics produced which leads to rising pollution, rising temperatures, and rising sea levels (see the full brief below).
Sally’s photo was chosen amongst many other talented students across the country and will be on display from Saturday 27 May to Sunday 10 September at Turner Contemporary in Margate, as part of their summer exhibition.
We contacted Sally about her achievement, and she said: Although I’m now a first-year student at Canterbury Christ Church University studying for a BA in Photography, I decided to submit one of my photographs from my final major project (FMP) as it was relevant to the brief from the Turner Contemporary.
The title of my FMP was Fashion Pollution, so, I designed a dress and accessories out of plastic bags, milk bottle tops, and crisp packets. I’m excited to see my work displayed to over 80,000 people this summer.’
Congratulations to Sally on this incredible achievement. We wish you all the best in your further studies at university.

The Brief: Rising
Rising ~ A word that is both inspiring and frightening. We are living in a time of climate crisis. Rising consumption leads to rising numbers of plastics produced which leads to rising pollution, rising temperatures, and rising sea levels. But it is not all bad; there is hope. Rising awareness of these issues is leading to rising activism, rising social outcry, and a future generation with a rising desire to do things differently. We are interested in art that addresses the full spectrum of these issues. We want to see work that highlights the dangers we face, as well as work that celebrates what we can do to change current systems. Art does not just have to exist on a canvas. We are keen to see people thinking outside of traditional artistic mediums. Art can be a public protest, a piece of land art, or even an invention that tackles the environmental challenges we face. Art can be performance, it can be filmed, it can be poetry.
