Do you like to fix things and have an interest in how cars work? Whether it’s just getting people to and from work, or transporting people and goods internationally, vehicles are essential in today’s modern world.
During your apprenticeship you’ll learn a wide range of relevant, practical and job specific skills that you’ll be able to apply quickly within your workplace. You’ll spend the majority of your time in a professional workshop or garage learning the skills needed to keep the vehicles in a good and safe condition.
You’ll also improve your customer service skills, be checking stock levels and ordering parts. You could also learn how to fit and service accessories like stereos and alarms.
What will I learn?
Throughout your apprenticeship you’ll be taught not only the theory, but also the practical hands-on skills. Depending on your apprenticeship you could learn:
- Mechanical diagnostics
- Electronic diagnostics
- Engine management diagnostics
- Control system diagnostics
- How to identify faults
- Routine maintenance and basic repairs.
Health and safety will also feature in your apprenticeship to ensure you and others stay safe in your workplace. You’ll also study English and maths at a level to suit you. Being confident in these skills will enable you to communicate effectively with customers or within your team, as well as order stock or calculate costs.
How will I be assessed?
Your dedicated training officer will assess most of your learning in your workplace. you’ll head to College one day a week, learning theory to support your practical work on-site. English and maths are also part of the study programme, so you will be assessed at a level that is appropriate to you.

How do I apply for an apprenticeship?
Choose the level of Mechanic apprenticeship that is most appropriate to you from the selection of programmes above. A level 2 apprenticeship is approximately equivalent to GCSE, level 3 to A level and level 4 to degree level. Select “Apply”, register your email address and then complete the required details.
You’ll need to meet set entry requirements, and we’ll invite you in for an interview, and possibly an assessment, depending on the level. But it’s nothing to worry about!

How much do apprentices earn?
Employers must provide their apprentices with a contract of employment for a minimum of 30 hours per week, which should include your attendance at College. Apprentices must be paid at least the National Apprenticeship Minimum Wage, but this can be increased at the discretion of your employer.

How much do motor mechanics get paid?*
A recently qualified technician can expect to earn on average £18,000 per year. More experienced mechanics can earn between £21,000-27,000 per year, and highly experienced technicians up to £35,000. Mechanics usually work between 38-45 hours per week, often with some weekend hours.
