Course Description

Access to HE Humanities & Social Science is suitable for those aged 17yrs+ who wish to study and gain entry to university after 1 year. It is an intensive, fast paced course for those seeking to study a degree in any of the subjects within the program. Support is given for UCAS application completion, and a minimum of 37hours work experience is completed as part of the course. This course requires a high level of self-motivation and determination, and you will need to be able to work independently as well as within lessons

Core units include English Literature, History, Psychology, Sociology, Business, and other Humanities subjects. These units encourage academic rigour, skills and debate as students consider the nature of the social world and various aspects within it such as employment, politics, and justice. Students consider a wide range of topics that influence that way that individuals think, and the way that society operates.


  • English literature covers modern and classic text from authors such as Shakespeare, Rosetti and Poe.

  • Sociology involves studying classic theories and their application to the modern world and social issues of today.

  • Psychology explores a arrange of topics from classic experiments through to mental health and the early socialisation of children.

  • The Humanities topics include Politics, Philosophy, Anthropology and Cultural Studies.

  • Business units serve as an introduction to the subject and explore key areas to provide a solid foundation ready for university.

Other Important Information

HE Study Skills also form part of the course and you will gain various skills such as Harvard referencing, note-taking, unbiased debate and academic writing skills. GCSE maths will also form part of your study program. The course is assessed through coursework and timed assessments.

Future Prospects

The intended destination for students on this course is progression to University.

Entry Requirements

GCSE English at grade 4/C or higher is required.

You will undertake an English and maths assessment and interview as part of the application process.
