Course Description

Higher National Certificates are specialist programmes linked to professional body requirements and national occupational standards where appropriate, with a strong work-related emphasis.

This qualification builds a strong foundation in the key concepts and practical skills required by employers in the civil engineering/ construction sector.

Students will gain both a practical and theoretical understanding of the scientific, mathematical and design principles that will help them progress to professional and management roles in the industry. The following modules will be studied throughout the course:

> Typical lessons will involve research-based activities, individual and group projects, practical exercises and presentations

Future Prospects

Successful completion could lead to employment as a technician or in a middle management/professional role within the civil engineering, structural design, highway maintenance, local authority or utility industries. Some students may also want to continue onto the HND in Civil Engineering (Top-up).

Entry Requirements

You will need one of the following:
> 80 UCAS (under the new tariff) points from A-levels (including a minimum C grade/4 grade in maths)
> A BTEC National Certificate (minimum MMM grade)
> An Extended Diploma (minimum MMM grade)
> A GNVQ (Advanced) in a relevant discipline
> An Access to Higher Education Diploma.

Mature candidates who do not meet the above criteria may still be admitted to the course subject to an interview with the programme director. The interview includes an admissions test for English and maths.
