Course Description

Engineering is a broad discipline and covers a range of industry sectors such as manufacturing, maintenance, civil engineering, aeronautical etc, and within that covers a multitude of professions and specialisms such as welders, fabricators, electrical and mechanical engineers, product designers etc

This level 3 course is designed to help students to progress to either univeristy, secure a higher level apprenticeship or gain immediate employment in an engineering discipline.

Students initially enrol onto a 1 year Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Engineering in their first year, and with good grades they can then progress onto the National Extended Diploma in Engineering for their 2nd year. Students require strong mathematical skills to be successful on this course and students will need to have at least a grade 5 at GCSE to secure a place.

The course is designed to support students to develop theoretical knowledge, academic & analytical skills and focuses on design-led problem solving solutions to key engineering problems.

As a general guide, students are likely to complete the following units over the 2 year course:

Engineering Principles
Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely as a Team
Engineering Product Design and Manufacture
Applied Commercial and Quality Principles in Engineering
Electronic Devices and Circuits 6
Electronic Printed Circuit Board Design and Manufacture
Computer Aided Design in Engineering
Microcontroller Systems for Engineers
A Specialist Engineering Project
Calculus to Solve Engineering Problem
Further Engineering Mathematics
Maintenance of Mechanical Systems
Static Mechanical Principles in Practice
Programmable Logic Controllers

Other Important Information

> Lessons will consist of classroom-based theory lessons, workshops and laboratory sessions.
> You will be continuously assessed throughout the course by way of written and practical coursework, projects and controlled tests and examinations.

Future Prospects

Successful completion of the course can lead to many opportunities, such as to progress onto a degree course, or to secure a higher level apprenticeship in an engeineering discipline, or to access a wide variety of employment opportunities such as a trainee electrical engineer, electronics engineer, engineering technician, technical support operative and lots more.

Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including English and maths at grade C/4 or above.
