Course Description

This Level 3 BTEC Foundation Diploma in Engineering can be taken as a 1 year course (equivalent to 1.5 A'Levels), or students who wish to progress can enrol onto our Level 3 Btec Extended Diploma in Engineering course (equivalent to 3 A'levels in total) for their 2nd year.

On this course you will develop your knowledge of the principles, practises, and theory, essential to the engineering industry, whilst also gaining a thorough understanding of workplace health and safety, correct working practices, communications, and industry standards that your future engineering career requires. You will study 7 units (2 are double units) in your first year, and will be expected to work both as part of a team and independently. This course covers a wide range of engineering subjects such as Engineering Principles, Engineering Processes, Product Design & Manufacture, Quality Principles, CAD, Electronic circuits.

Most students progress onto university after the 2 year course, however, some students gain higher level apprenticeships or employment in engineering/manufacturing sectors.

You will also undertake an industry placement which will support you to gain an insight into the wide and varied discplines of the engineering sector and help you to develop essential employability skills.

This full-time course also includes a tutorial programme which aims to help you to become successful independent learners, supports your well-being, provides careers guidance and advice as well as helps to further develop your knowledge and skills to become active citizens who contribute positively to society.

Other Important Information

> Lessons will consist of workshop and laboratory sessions, classroom talks and visits to engineering companies
> You will be continuously assessed throughout the course by way of written and practical coursework, projects and controlled tests
> This is a study programme which includes English, maths and work experience in addition to your main programme

Future Prospects

Successful completion of the course can open the door to a wide variety of employment opportunities, for example as an electrical engineer, electronics engineer, engineering technician, technical support person and lots more. Alternatively you may progress to a higher education course at the College or university or an advanced apprenticeship.

Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including English and maths at grade C/4 or above.
