Course Description

Considering a career in sport and a passion to develop further in the field of Sport and Exercise Science? Look no further. This course will help you gain a running start towards employment in the sport, fitness and leisure industries through a combination of practical (e.g. coaching for fitness and performance and specialised fitness training) and theoretical (e.g. anatomy and psychology) units. The course is nationally recognised and provides you with the equivalent of 1.5 A-Levels and the opportunity to progress onto the National Extended Diploma, which is the equivalent of 3 A-Levels.

This course is for you if you want to learn about a variety of topics related to sport and exercise science, including anatomy and physiology, psychology, biomechanics and more. You will be assessed on six units which will be delivered using both practical and theoretical teaching. Two units will be exam based set by the awarding body.

You will be assessed through a variety of assessment methods, all of which are aimed at a more vocational method of study. These include presentations, practical skills demonstrations, exams and written assignments.

Other Important Information

You will learn through a variety of activities including discussions, practical sessions, guest speakers and educational trips
. You will be assessed on your written tasks and practical performance, and you will also be required to build a portfolio of evidence.

All MidKent College students will continue studying English and maths until they are 19, or until they have achieved a Grade C/4. Your study programme will incorporate a Work Placement of up to 350 hours in a role relevant to your study. All students will have access to a Personal Tutor to support their personal and professional development.

You will be required to purchase the college kit through our uniform supplier. You may wish to purchase course textbooks to support your learning.

Future Prospects

This course will provide you with the opportunity to progress onto year two of the course to complete the National Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science. This qualification is equivalent to 3 A-Levels and will enable entry into university courses. This course attracts UCAS points (Range 48-168).

The course has many career progression opportunities depending on the pathway you choose to take, helping you move onto a higher education course, train to be a PE teacher or take up a variety of careers in either fitness and therapy, football development or health and nutrition (including new careers in public health to prevent chronic illnesses).

Five GCSEs at grade C/4 or above including English and maths at grade C/4 or above.
