I chose MidKent College after coming to an open day and I just loved the College environment – it isn’t all classroom work its fun stuff, like practical work too. I found the open day really helpful as I knew what I wanted to do but I was also able to speak to the tutors.

So far on my course I’ve covered a variety of subjects from the government and how that works/influences uniformed services, conflict management, war and conflict, land based and water-based activities( which has been one of my personal favourites!) We got to go away for two nights to participate in kayaking and laser tag at Stubbers Residential which was fun.

I like that we’re not in a classroom every lesson as I like getting out and doing extra activities. I love the tutors, they’re really friendly.
College is a lot different from school as it’s much more relaxed – it’s a more grown-up environment, you have to make sure you keep up with the work yourself rather than having teachers keep reminding you.

After this course I want to join the Royal Navy, but I need to go to university first before I can do this. I feel that College is helping me to prepare for this as I’ve gained a lot of hands-on experience that will help me when going into the service. I have a better understanding of how the ranks work and what a typical day might look like. We’ve also had people come in from the Armed Forces to talk to us about their jobs and personal experiences. I’ve always wanted to join the Navy and travel the world.

For anyone in year 11 now and thinking about next steps I would advise that you do lots of research and speak to a careers advisor and come to an open day, it helped me.
