I’m doing Carpentry Level 3 as an apprenticeship. I’m currently working for a company in Sheerness called Tribune Shopfitters where I carry out lots of different work – at the moment I’m working on a Shepherd Neame pub.

The best thing about being an apprentice is the work – when you go to site you’ve got various different people to learn off of, the people there are all different ages, everyone has a different way of working so I can learn from them.

We do mostly Carpentry so I’ve learned about stud works and walls which can include floors or ceilings, roofs – you do all sorts here, it’s good.

I chose this as I’m quite practical and I find it quite fun. It’s also good that you earn money which increases as you go up through the levels. I’ve been apprentice of the month which was nice.

The thing I like most about College is the people – it’s nice to be able to talk to different people and find out what they do and what other work is out there. I come into College once a week, the tutors are all very positive and if you’re struggling they’re always there to point you in the right direction.

We have to do a lot of power points that include pictures of our work that we’ve done on site – at the end you have three tests, there’s a practical where you go into the workshop and show what you’ve learned, there’s a professional discussion which ivolves you talking on a video about what you’ve done over the past few years and general knowledge. We also have to learn about health and safety, it all goes towards the qualification.
