At MidKent College, I started with GCSE maths one day a week. I had been a full-time mum for many years, so it was hard for the family, with mum being less available and the dining table being littered with books. It was a big change in the house.

What I have learned from my experience is that you can do anything you put your mind to. Step outside your comfort zone. I didn’t have any confidence. That’s changed dramatically. I could never imagine seven years ago I would be where I am now. I’m working as a social worker in a fostering agency, and I really enjoy my job, which has a great salary.

I always thought I would love to be a social worker, and go to university, but was terrified of maths, which I required to gain a place at university. My children were good at maths, and I home educated my twins when they were in years 5-6. To support them I had to teach myself maths, which helped me to overcome my initial fear.

Me working so hard also set an example for my children. My children have been inspired by my journey. My friends and family have said how proud they are of me. My children have seen me go through the whole process, and it makes them work harder: ‘mum, we’ve seen what you’ve gone through made me want to do it too.’ I have made really good relationships and I’m still in contact with the people I studied with.

It was strange but on my first day, I was lucky someone I went to school with was in the same class, so that was helpful. I quite enjoyed being back in that learning environment. It was just a different experience.

My tutor for English, Richard, was amazing. He made it come alive, he was so passionate about the subject. All the tutors were great. I really enjoyed the subject areas and it set me in good stead for university.

As soon as we started Access, we were working on our UCAS application. I wrote my personal statement seven times before I sent it off. Within a month I was offered an interview with the University of Kent, and then received a conditional offer for BA in social work at the Medway campus. I also gained a scholarship which Access students can apply for.
