We’re currently learning about sustainability and age of waste, so making sure you’re using products in the right way and being kind to the environment but also making something really eye capturing with that.
I really enjoyed our first topic ‘persona’ which involved a bit more self-exploration – we did a lot about personal items and what has a meaning to us. We explored lots of different lighting and it was about incorporating your own life with different elements of photography as well.
My favourite part about the course is being able to have my own ideas about things – it gives me a sense of imagination. I like the creative expression especially – it gives me an outlet sometimes.
I chose MidKent College as it offered a lot of facilities. It’s really easy for me to get here as well – I didn’t want to go to sixth form either. I also came to two open days as I wanted to make sure I definitely wanted to do photography. I found the open days really helpful as I was able to talk to students who had already done the course as well.
Whilst being at College I’ve had work experience in the GlassBox theatre where I got to take pictures of the rehearsals there. I also stayed for an open evening and spoke to parents and potential students who were looking around. I’d still like to do more work experience as the year goes on – I’m looking to get my own camera so I can try and get work using social media, etc.
I absolutely feel that my tutors have prepared me for a career in the industry. The weekly objectives we get are very detailed and they tell us exactly everything that we need to do – there’s no miscommunications anywhere. We’ve been learning on more professional cameras so we’re ready for when we use them in a work environment – it’s really helpful.
There’s a lot of different things you can do with a photography course e.g. product design, photography is sometimes just the starting point. I would recommend the course.
After this course I’m not 100% sure yet, I’ve thought about going to university, but I would also like to do product design.
Before starting at College I wish I’d known that it’s a lot more responsibility, it prepares you to be an adult, you’re a lot more independent here. It’s up to you to make sure you’ve done your work but like I say it’s preparing you to be an adult and go into the real world.
