In class we’re currently doing one of our exam units about all the different roles working within health and social care and what kind of policies and regulations need to be set to make sure patients are getting the right amount of care.

My favourite part of the course is when we do more practical stuff as it helps us practice using equipment you can use to help others – I find it really interesting to see. Every Friday we have someone from the NHS come in from different professions – last year we had someone who specialised in learning disabilities so we got to learn all about that e.g. what they do to help out and health issues that may be common, etc.

We also had three nurses come in who teach basic life support so we learnt CPR and they taught us how to do the Heimlich manoeuvre.

I chose MidKent College as it was the closest College to me, and I heard a lot of great things about it. I did one year in sixth form before coming here.

Whilst being at College I had work experience working in my old school, this year I’m working with a youth group which is for children with autism and their parents to go and have fun and do different things. I help out a lot and communicate with the young people there, I do different activities with them.

My tutors have prepared me for a career in the industry by treating us how we would be in a work setting e.g. making sure you’re on time to class, they teach you how to be a professional and what being a professional is about.

After this course I’m hoping to be a youth worker, I’m planning on going down the volunteering route and hopefully I’ll be able to get a job after as I have a lot of experience.

I would recommend this course to other students if you like helping other people, or if you want to be a nurse/carer. I think it’s a great starting point as this course will teach you all sorts of different things in different professions. It allows you to go further into another course e.g. if you want to do T levels, or progress to university or an apprenticeship. There’s lots of different paths and different careers.
