In my apprenticeship at the moment I’ve been building houses, so we get the inside skin up, and then the brick and concrete work on the outside. I’m 28 and was a manager in care but I was looking for something different.
My friend offered to show me how to do pointing but my dad and uncle are also in the construction industry. I’d recommend others to change their career – I’m enjoying it. I’m focused on getting my apprenticeship done as quickly as possible. I’d do the level 3 too if my employer offered it.
So far I’ve done two competitions since starting College; the KFE one and the City & Guilds one. KFE I came second overall, and third in a recent Guild of Bricklayers competition. This was against about 10 other students.
