The Christmas season is meant to be the most wonderful time of the year, but let’s be honest—it can also be overwhelming. Between school stress, family expectations, and social pressures, it’s easy to feel like you’re juggling too much at once. If you’re feeling the festive tension, here’s how to keep your cool and enjoy the season.

Prioritise your wellbeing

Christmas can feel like a whirlwind, but your mental health comes first.
• Take breaks: Whether it’s stepping away from family chaos or taking a breather from holiday plans, it’s okay to say, “I need a minute.”
• Do what you enjoy: Whether that’s gaming, sketching, or binge-watching your favourite show, make time for activities that help you relax.

Keep things in perspective

It’s easy to get caught up in the idea of a “perfect Christmas,” but perfection isn’t real.
• Don’t stress if things don’t go exactly to plan—some of the best memories come from unexpected moments.
• Avoid comparing your holiday to others. Social media only shows the highlights, not the reality behind the filters.

Manage family time

Let’s face it—family can be great, but also a bit much sometimes.
• Set boundaries: If a family conversation is getting too intense, politely excuse yourself for some alone time.
• Find your allies: Stick with the family members or friends who make you feel comfortable and supported.

Stay organised

If Christmas feels overwhelming because of all the things you need to do, try this:
• Make a to-do list: Breaking tasks into small steps can make everything feel more manageable.
• Ask for help: You don’t have to do everything yourself—whether it’s wrapping presents or planning, involve others.

Look after your body

When your body feels good, your mind tends to follow.

  • Stay active: Even a 15-minute walk in the crisp winter air can boost your mood.
  • Eat well: Enjoy your festive treats, but try to balance them with some fruits and veggies to keep your energy levels steady.
  • Sleep: Don’t let late-night scrolling or endless Netflix marathons steal your rest.

Reach out if you need support

Feeling overwhelmed isn’t something you have to handle alone. There are people and organisations ready to help:

Remember: It’s okay not to feel festive

If you’re not vibing with the holiday cheer, that’s totally fine. You don’t have to force yourself to feel a certain way.

  • Focus on what makes you happy, whether that’s spending time with friends, reading a good book, or listening to your favourite music.
  • Remind yourself, Christmas is just a season, and it’s okay to feel however you feel.
