Starting a new term can be exciting, but it can also feel a bit nerve-wracking, especially if you're new to life at College. Whether you're stepping into a new environment or just picking up where you left off, here are some tips to help you feel more at ease and make new friends along the way.

Remember, Everyone's in the Same Boat

First things first: you're not alone! A lot of your classmates are probably feeling just as nervous as you are. It’s normal to worry about fitting in or keeping up with your studies, but the truth is, everyone’s figuring it out as they go. A little bit of nervousness is natural and can even help you stay alert and focused.

Be Open to New Experiences

One of the best ways to make friends is to put yourself out there. Come along to our Fresher's Week activities, join a club and use our Social Zones. These activities are not only fun, but they also give you the chance to meet people with similar interests. Remember, friendships often start with a shared experience, so don’t be afraid to try something new!

Start Small with Conversations

If approaching new people feels intimidating, start with small steps. You don’t have to dive into deep conversations right away. A simple “Hey, how was your summer?” or “What did you think of that assignment?” can break the ice. The key is to be friendly and show genuine interest in others. Over time, these small interactions can grow into lasting friendships.

Practice Self-Compassion

It's easy to be hard on yourself if things don't go perfectly right away. Maybe you feel shy or worry about saying the wrong thing. Remember that nobody expects you to be perfect. Everyone makes mistakes or has awkward moments—it's all part of being human. Be kind to yourself and remember that each day is a new opportunity to try again.

Find Your Support System

Having a few close friends or trusted people you can turn to makes a big difference. They can be your go-to for advice, a listening ear, or just someone to sit with at lunch. If you’re finding it hard to connect with others, consider talking to a tutor or one of our Student Engagement Team—they're there to help.

Take Care of Your Mind and Body

Your physical and mental well-being play a huge role in how you handle stress. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep, eating well, and taking breaks when needed. If you're feeling overwhelmed, take a few deep breaths, go for a walk, or listen to your favourite music. A healthy body and mind can help you tackle challenges more effectively. If these steps aren't working, or you feel worse, please get in touch with our Student Support team - we have a dedicated team, including counsellors at each campus as well as staff to help you with careers, financial and health advice.

Set Realistic Goals

Starting a new term is a great time to set some goals for yourself, but make sure they’re realistic. Whether it’s aiming for better grades, joining a new club, or just being more organised, set goals that are achievable and build on them as you go. Success is all about progress, not perfection.

Be Yourself

Finally, the best way to make real friends and feel comfortable in any situation is to be yourself. You don’t have to change who you are to fit in. People are drawn to authenticity, so let your true self shine! The right friends will appreciate you for who you are.

Remember, this is just the beginning of another chapter in your life, full of opportunities to grow, learn, and make new connections. Good luck!
