Before I took my GCSEs, I had no clear direction for my future. Initially, I was considering a career in sports, but everything changed when my mum mentioned the job my uncle does—Quantity Surveying. After researching it, I knew instantly that was the path I wanted to pursue.

My first encounter with Wates was through a government apprenticeship website. I applied for a role but wasn’t successful. However, rather than discouraging me, they offered me a chance to attend the Wates Summer Camp in Salford in 2024, followed by a 6-week paid internship. It was an incredible opportunity I didn’t expect, and it changed everything for me.

During the Summer Camp, I met some amazing people and learned about the world of construction and quantity surveying. By the time my internship started in August 2024, I was both excited and nervous. It was my first time working in an office environment, but I was welcomed with open arms by the Wates team. I spent my six weeks visiting sites, creating case studies, volunteering, and even taking part in team-building activities. One of the highlights was being named "Camper of the Week," which I will always cherish.

Midway through my internship, I received an offer from Midkent College to enroll in their 'Level 3 T-Level Surveying & Planning' course. The course required me to complete a one-day-a-week work placement, and I was lucky enough to have Wates offer me the opportunity to return for my T-Level placement.

Within just a few weeks, I was out on site at Wells House in Oxford Street, and what struck me most was how supportive and friendly everyone was. The site was much calmer than I expected, with people always willing to answer my questions and guide me along the way.

Now, after 8 months with Wates, I can honestly say how grateful I am for this incredible opportunity. From my first day at the Summer Camp to now, I’ve been made to feel like part of the Wates family, and I’m excited about what the future holds.

Thank you to everyone who has helped me along the way—I can't wait for my next steps here at Wates.
