We caught up with apprentice Hayley Bashford recently to hear more about her exciting progression in the booming construction industry for Women in Construction Week 2022. Apply online today if a Construction apprenticeship is for you!

"I am currently an apprentice, studying on the Level 4 Apprenticeship in Surveying and working for Ferns Group in the Commercial Team. At the moment, we're completing our Unit 3 Science and Materials, where we are learning about aggregate grading, Hooke’s law and water absorption. It was fun doing the experiments and interesting to learn about something we wouldn’t necessarily do in our jobs.

My lecturer Charlotte has helped me throughout my Level 3 and now my Level 4. If I struggle with anything on the course, if I ask for help she is always happy to sit down and go through things at my pace.

I'm really not bothered about being a woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry. At first I was worried that I would be treated differently because I am a woman, however after years in the construction industry I can say I have enjoyed every minute of it and would feel no different working in a female-dominated area.

Once I have finished my Level 4 qualification, I plan to attend university and get a degree in Surveying, as well as get Chartered status. My goal as of now is to work my way up to Commercial Manager.

My advice to anyone thinking of joining this industry is "go for it!". It's a very interesting and rewarding career."
