Broadstairs apprentice bricklayer Archie Supple of MidKent College won first place in the KFE (Kent Further Education) trade skills competition in Folkestone on March 8 and will now be entered into the national competition.

Archie, who works for ROE Brickworks is a 2nd year apprentice with the College and for his first place had to compete against students from other Colleges in a live bricklaying challenge. MidKent College Apprentice Trainer, Lloyd Woodhall said: ‘Every College had the drawings, so I had Archie practice it before we went. I asked his employer if he could come to College one extra day to practice. Archie always puts 100% into every task I set him. When I go on his site visits his supervisor told me he is a credit to apprentices, and he has done well in this competition.’

Luke Chilcott, director, ROE Brickworks, Ramsgate, said: ‘Archie was the youngest apprentice taken on by Roe, just 16 a couple of weeks before he started work. Since then, he has performed well at both work and College and his confidence grows every week. It’s a pleasure to have a committed apprentice, and we are as proud of his achievements as he is.’

Archie Supple and Sophie Robins who came 2nd in last year’s KFE competition are now being entered into the Guild of Bricklayers’ national Brickwork competition this year at Reading College.

Three MidKent College Painting and Decorating apprentices also took part in the competition. They are on a Level 2 course at the College.

Tyler Ransley who works at Bear Necessities Decorators got second place, Leo Bryer who works at Ian Williams placed third and Mollie Platts, also an Ian Williams apprentice attended but was unplaced.
