Building on the success of its work with Rivermead School to provide an inclusive 6th form environment for students with Special Educational Needs (SEN), in September 2024 MidKent College will assume full responsibility for the partnership’s SEN offer.

This strategic move aims to enhance the quality of services offered to students with SEN and disabilities, and to promote a seamless transition for both students and their families into the College.

The decision to entrust MidKent College with SEN provision reflects the institution's commitment to inclusivity and to creating an environment that enables every student to thrive. The College is eager to build upon its reputation for educational excellence and extend its expertise to cater specifically to the unique needs of students requiring additional support.

Simon Cook, Principal and CEO at MidKent College expressed enthusiasm about this new development, stating, "We pride ourselves on being an active part of the communities we serve. Our focus with young people to help develop independence, skills and confidence before progressing on to University, employment or life means that we are really keen to see even more young people thrive and flourish and receive the highest quality education and support available to them."

Christina Hart, Executive Director for Student Support and the College’s lead for this new provision added that “Having listened to parents and carers, and to the young people themselves, we believe that this will be an incredibly beneficial change which will provide clarity and accountability for SEN education alongside, give students a stronger identity and sense of belonging, and improved access to resources.  Of course, any period of change can be unsettling and continuity in education is very important; we’re working hard to protect jobs and continuity of student support, and working closely with the Medway Parents and Carers Forum to ensure that we can address any specific questions, concerns or suggestions from parents and carers.”

Cllr Teresa Murray, Medway Council’s Deputy Leader, said: “I am delighted that MidKent College will be taking over responsibility for sixth form students with Special Education Needs. The move will help even more young people thrive and develop independence, in an inspiring and supportive environment. The college offers a wide range of courses and opportunities which will give our young people with additional needs a great choice.

“Medway has a fantastic range of schools to suit all needs, and we are dedicated to helping all children achieve their full potential.”

The College is dedicated to retaining experienced staff, protecting jobs, and fostering a supportive environment that ensures the well-being and progress of every student.
