On Tuesday, June 4th, MidKent College hosted an exciting new Touch Union development session at Medway Park in association with England Rugby Colleges (ECRFU).

The event brought together 26 students from our Medway and Maidstone campuses, along with four students from Aylesford School, which collaborates closely with Mid-Kent College on young leader development. In a generous gesture, the ECRFU presented us with £300 worth of rugby kit to support ongoing play.

The session began in the sports hall, where students delved into game sense coaching and learned to develop the game of Touch through engaging games. Despite 85% of the participants having no prior rugby experience, they quickly grasped the basics and then learned how to teach the game to schoolchildren and peers.

The activities then transitioned to the outdoor grass area, where the students got to put their new skills into practice on the pitch. Meanwhile, those less inclined to play took on the roles of referees and game controllers, ensuring everyone was involved and learning.

Chris Manley, MidKent College sports tutor, said: “It’s been a long time since we played any form of rugby, and we are looking forward to more activities and learning around the game and leadership. We thank ECRFU for their time and interest in our students.”

Aylesford School’s Laura Rookard who is involved in school games organization and leadership development, added, “Our students learned a lot about Touch Rugby and are eagerly anticipating their next interaction with the game, whether with peers or when introducing it in local schools.”

The students are excited about the prospect of attending Coram’s Field in London on October 16th to compete against other London colleges. They are also keen to help other colleges introduce friendly fixtures and local competitions, fostering a growing community around the sport.
