Chris Symonds, a former MidKent College student, turned his College work experience into a career as a technician.
Starting as a Performing Arts & Music Technician at the College, Chris has now achieved his dream role as a General Technician with Disney Cruise Lines. He shares his inspiring journey from student to traveling the world in the following interview:
Why did you choose MidKent College?
I chose MidKent College because unfortunately I didn’t attain the grades to go to sixth form. However, MidKent pushed me to get those grades and help me get to where I am today!
What did you study at MidKent College?
I studied Performing Arts Level 2-3 between 2018 & 2021
Can you describe your journey from College to how you secured your dream role?
A lot of hard work is how! I first started with work experience at the GlassBox Theatre whilst I was still a student and progressed with them through my three years. I was then offered a job as the first Event Support team member. This role included bar work, front of house management and some technical skills. I particularly enjoyed the technical aspects, which led me to take on the role of Performing Arts & Music Technician for an academic year. This experience has been instrumental in leading me to my new role - working for Disney Cruise Lines as one of their General Technicians ship wide! This role will take me all around the world working in places such as Alaska, New Zealand and many more! I am forever grateful to MidKent for helping me get to where I am today!
What did you enjoy most about your time at College?
My favourite part about being a student at MidKent was the freedom to become who I am, there was no one holding me back and I had complete free reign to choose which ever skills I liked.
What are you doing now?
Currently I still hold the Performing Arts & Music Technician role however, I will be departing the College in November to pursue a career with Disney Cruise Lines as a General Technician!
Would you recommend MidKent College?
I would recommend MidKent to anyone who wishes to pursue a career within the arts as there are so many opportunities to create a better you such as trips, visits from industry professionals and much more!
