Former Level 3 in Public Services student Molly McCann visited the College to tell us the brilliant news that she is now a proud member of the Royal Navy!
After completing her study programme at our Maidstone Campus in 2018 she then signed on to a year long intense training course and is now AB McCann (Able Rate) aboard HMS Albion. Albion is an amphibious assault ship with a landing dock platform for transporting Royal Marines.
Molly told us it was always her plan to join the Navy and that’s why she chose to enrol on the Public Services study programme. She explained, “Certain aspects of the programme have helped me prepare for life in the Navy, like the discipline – we always had to muster outside in the morning and ensure we were wearing correct uniform. No one in my family has been in the Navy, but I was really excited about the opportunity to travel. Life is good so far – we’ve just come out of a sea-trial period which is really hard. You feel quite sleep deprived but have to carry on with your duties”.
Our Public Services programme offers students the chance to gain the skills and experience required for a life in the Armed Forces or emergency services. They learn from qualified and experienced tutors about health and fitness, leadership and teamwork, driving and the law, government and politics, understanding discipline and citizenship.
Molly really enjoyed the trips and found these to be a highlight of the programme. She said, “We went to the Top Gear race-track, visited a prison and went to Wales for an outdoor activity week which was really good fun.” She went on to say “The programme is a great stepping stone for joining the services. A lot of the tutors have been there and done it so that really helps.”
Mark Lampard, Head of Department for Sport & Public Services said “Huge congratulations to Molly! She achieved great results on her programme and we’re really proud that she is now a member of the Royal Navy. We’re sure she will make a great success of her career there.”
Molly hopes to progress through the ranks with her sights set on becoming a Leading Hand which takes two to four years. Keep up the good work Molly – we hope to hear more about your adventures on the high seas in the future!
