The Happold Brilliant award, recognises excellence in the teaching of building services engineering. This prestigious acknowledgement has been awarded annually since 1996. Administered by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) the award was the idea of the late Ted Happold, who believed deeply in promoting the excellence of teaching ‘Building Services Engineering’- acknowledging the contribution quality education can bring to the work, values and ideas of engineers for the future.

We are delighted to announce that the recipient of the ‘Happold Brilliant Award’ 2016/17 is MidKent College. The recipient of the great news was Kim Howes, lecturer of Building Services Engineering who received a letter from CIBSE explaining that the College had won the award for excellence in the teaching of Building Services Engineering.

The letter from CIBSE stated that the panel had “been impressed by the excellent standard of teaching at MidKent College. The small class sizes are a strength of the course and the proximity of the laboratories to the classroom is of great benefit to the students. The development of soft skills (an often overlooked area for engineering student development) and interrelationships between students is commendable.”

Kim attended the prestigious CIBSE President’s Award Dinner on behalf of MidKent College and was presented with an engraved crystal chalice and a cheque for the department for £1000. Kim hopes to spend the prize money on software to enhance student learning.
