Owen, an Entry 2 Progression student, is deeply passionate about wheelchair American Football.

Recently, he participated in filming for a Nickelodeon production centred around this sport, which has been published worldwide and included in NFL broadcasts across America. We recently sat down with Owen to delve into his experiences with wheelchair American Football and his journey at College:

When did you get involved in wheelchair American Football?
Because it’s fun, me and my mum found out about it from a man named Dean. I have been playing American football for a few years now. It helps with my upper body strength and my back.

Do you enjoy watching American Football? If so, who is your favourite team?
I enjoy watching American Football at home I watch it with mum. I don’t have a favourite team; I follow and support all the teams.

What do you enjoy most about wheelchair American Football?
I enjoy playing with my friends. We have a good time playing together.

Has taking part helped you to make new friends?
Yes, it has helped me make friends and be more confident in talking to new people.

If people are interested in learning more or getting involved in wheelchair American football - where can they find out more information?
They can find information on the American Football website.

Would you recommend wheelchair American Football to others?
Yes, I would recommend this to others, it is lots of fun!

Did you come to College straight from school?
I came to Midkent from Canterbury College.

What made you choose to come to College and why particularly MidKent?
I didn’t have a good experience at Canterbury College, I wanted to come to a friendly College to learn and have a better experience.

Did you attend an open event? If so, did it help you make your decision?
Me and my mum came to look around the College on our own, Elise the director of the foundation department showed us around. After looking around the College me and my mum were happy, and it made me want to come to MidKent College.

What are you currently studying at College?
I am currently studying E2 in personal, and social development and skills for independent living. I am also taking E1 in English and Maths.

What have you enjoyed the most about College?
I enjoy being with my friends.

What do you think of your tutors?
My tutors are really nice, helpful and friendly.

How is College different from school?
It is different as I get to explore the different departments, I get to experience new things which helps my self-confidence and social skills. I am allowed to be independent at College, I never did any of this at Canterbury College.

What do you want to do when you finish College?
At the moment I volunteer at Coca-Cola and would like to carry on with this when I finish College. I would like to do a supported internship with them.

Would you recommend Midkent College to other students thinking about coming to College?
Yes, I would recommend Midkent College to my family and friends. It is a lovely College to be at.

Well done Owen, we're incredibly proud of your achievement. Check out the Nickelodeon film here.
