MidKent College students are celebrating after their success in the recent KFE inter-college student skills competition. All FE colleges in Kent have the opportunity to compete in a range of different categories. Could Hospitality & Catering be for you?
The competition was held in-person in 2019 and 2020, and replaced in 2021 and 2023 with showcases of students’ work.
Our students produced some fantastic work, and managed to achieve:
Gold – Graphic Design
Gold – Music Performance (group)
Gold & Silver – Dance
Gold – Photography
Silver - Level 3 Beauty Therapy Body
Silver – Level 2 in Brickwork
Silver – Culinary Arts
Silver – Level 3 in Media Make Up
Silver – Solo Music Performance
Silver – Musical Theatre
Silver – Level 2 in Site Carpentry
Bronze – Beauty Therapy Hands & Face
Bronze – Fashion & Photography Make Up
Bronze – Graphic Design
Bronze – Hairdressing
Tasks set were what would be expected in industry, such as Bricklaying competitors building a wall with the numbers “2023” embedded in the layout. The wall also had a left and right side at a 90 degree angle and was assessed on 10 key points. Factors such as gauge, range, recessed number accuracy and the correct measurements for the details on the drawing were also assessed. Well done to Bricklaying student Sophie for achieving a silver medal!
Regional events such as the KFE Skills Competition is excellent practice for many national events that our students have competed in, including Worlds Skills UK.
Paul Lloyd, curriculum manager for Multi-Trades, Carpentry and Brickwork, said “We are very proud of our students. These are really high-pressured events and the students are assessed in great detail. Hopefully it will give them the confidence and encouragement to try for future competition events.”
Well done to all students involved – we look forward to competing again next year!
