Level 3 in Sport Science student Oliver Woods was chosen as Gillingham Football Club’s 12th man for the match against Tottenham Hotspur U21s on 12 November. He experienced a behind-the-scenes tour of the club!
Neil Hemstead, Curriculum Manager, said “We chose Oliver for the 12th man experience as a reward for his outstanding contribution to the department, such as supporting on the College open days. He has also demonstrated excellent commitment to his study programme, and we received excellent reports from his industry placement.”
Oliver, a dedicated football fan, experienced a rare behind-the-scenes tour of Gillingham Football Club, including the players’ entrance, the dressing rooms, the boot room and the gym! He also discovered more about the history of the club, and received a personalised shirt. The coaching facilities and physiotherapy rooms were of particular interest as Oliver is considering a career in teaching.
“In the future I’d like to become a teacher. I’m currently completing my industry placement at Cornwallis Academy. I’m also considering going into sport therapy such as rehabilitation from injury etc.
The highlight of the 12th man experience for me was probably just finding out about a football club that’s nearby because I support FC Barcelona so it’s not always very easy to go and watch a match!
You learn so many different things on this programme, as it’s really about the science of sport. As there’s loads of different topics you cover, this opens up different opportunities, and things you can explore.”
Oliver is currently completing his UCAS application, and his favourite choice so far is UCFB Wembley to study Coaching & Physical Education. We wish him all the best in his future studies, and for his career.
