We recognise that to be true leaders of sustainability in our local community, our reach and influence has to extend beyond the boundaries of our campuses.
It’s hugely important to us, and to our stakeholders, that we ‘walk the walk’ with sustainability and that every part of our business builds on sustainability as a foundational principle.
That’s why, as a large organisation, we’ve spent a lot of time considering how the way we purchase goods and services has a massive impact on the local environment
From an environmental perspective, responsible procurement can help to reduce resource depletion, lower carbon footprints, and protect biodiversity.
Socially, we want to see ethical working conditions and fair wages from our suppliers and a commitment to community development.
When it comes to economic resilience we know that a sustainability-driven business thrives on innovation and efficiency.
We’re therefore committed to sustainable procurement practices, and doing business with likeminded organisations who can demonstrate their own sustainability credentials. We ask our staff to consider the following when buying goods and services on behalf of the College:
- Does your supplier have a sustainability policy, or any environmental accreditations like ISO 14001? We want to support businesses who are taking sustainability issues seriously.
- Is your supplier based in Kent? Supporting our local business community can help reduce our carbon footprint and lessen the impact of deliveries.
- Is your supplier socially sustainable? We prefer to buy from businesses that prioritise diverse and inclusive working practices, ethical labour standards and community engagement.
- Do you really need this? If you do, fine, but please opt for reusable or refillable alternatives where possible. It’s important that we try to avoid single-use items where possible.
- What does it cost? Both price and sustainability are important and must be balanced out with many other factors in your purchasing decision.
